As of November 30, 2007 the 4 inch water main on Eggleston street which services 35 houses in the village of Corinth was still, after 2 years, pumping rusty brown water. The families on this street are unable to do laundry and think twice about drinking or bathing with it.
Though there have been repeated short term remedies such as back flushing through hydrants, the problem persists. Currently the Village and Town are debating whether or not to install filters to each residence affected, even though filters used by residents now plug up and become unusable after a short period. Residents with property damage (some 200+ people) caused by the poor water quality, have been instructed, by the Village Attorney to report property damage to the village clerk for processing of an insurance claim.
The 4 inch main on Walnut and Oak street is in much the same shape according to the water department. They indicate it would take a million dollars to correct the problem. What needs to be done is to dig up the old mains and install new one along with replacing the service to the houses.
We were instructed to wait until speaking with The Village water superintendant Arty Lozier 12/3/2007, before I put any information up onto this site. I have found the Village and Town water people to be great guys who would like nothing better than to fix this.
The underlying problem is after two years The Village and the Town boards have spent more money on finding arguments that pin the problem on each other rather than looking for long term remedies for the problem. Money which could be spent correcting the problem is instead being directed towards attorneys who are arguing that the town or village is at fault on this issue.
What needs to be done this winter is a solid agreement should be made between the town and village boards about fixing this problem. If it can't be done on their own, a third party arbitrator needs to be brought in and both parties agree to abide by his decision. This way this spring this 2 year issue of the basic human necessity - water can be ended, we would like to think that we are better than this in Corinth, That when our neighbors can't bathe properly drink or prepare food that the elected officials could get this fixed quick and not with a roll of duct tape and superglue either. For it to go on for two years and still no end in sight is totally unacceptable. It's a shame that we have to force them to solve this. We didn't elect attorneys to solve our issues we elected the Village and Town boards.
